Walk For
Water
Over 663 MILLION people do not have access to safe clean drinking water. While this may just be a statistic, what that ACTUALLY means is women and children spend hours a day walking for water! Children, typically between the ages of 8-13 will carry a 44 pound jerry can full of water an average distance of 3.75 miles a day. It typically takes 6-8 hours a day for women and children to transport water. This means women cannot get jobs and provide for their families, children can’t go to school and get an education. Our mission is simple, we empower our student leaders to join the fight and give clean water to communities on other parts of the world.
Walk For Water
WHY WE WALK
We walk because you won't hear about it on the news. There are still over 663 million people that still don't have access to clean water. It's not likely the next topic of conversation over dinner, but it needs to be. 1 in 9 people can't just turn on their sink to an endless supply of water. They have to walk. They walk an average of 3.75 miles, one way, every day. As they walk, they carry multiple jerrycans to hold water, 44 pounds each when filled. Hauling heavyweight leads to spinal deformities and spontaneous miscarriages. This hour-long walk prevents women from getting jobs. It keeps children from getting an education. And, the water they drink? We wouldn't even want to drink it. It contains fecal matter, insects, and other waterborne illnesses. It's simply unsanitary. It's even deadly. In fact, more children die every year from waterborne illness than AIDS and malaria combined. There are children who are dying from these waterborne illnesses since you started reading this. It's the greatest tragedy of all but it's all completely preventable. We walk so women and children don't have to. We walk to educate our youth and bring awareness of the water crisis.
